My Journey

Hello! I’m Sharmaine Calimlim, though many call me ShamSham. I was born and raised in the warm and lively city of Urdaneta, Pangasinan, in the northern Philippines. My story is one of growth, discovery, and finding my true calling. From childhood dreams to college lessons, from a new life in America to coming back home to Baguio City—this is the journey that led me to where I am today: a passionate online English teacher, filled with purpose and joy.

Growing Up in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan

Life in Urdaneta was simple but full of color. I grew up in a close-knit family where values like hard work, humility, and kindness were taught early. I was the type of child who loved to talk, laugh, and ask questions. I enjoyed books, music, and spending time with my loved ones. That love for learning and connection would later become key in my journey.

Education was always important in our family. After graduating from high school, I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Numbers and formulas kept me focused, and I enjoyed the structure and discipline of the course. At that time, I thought I would work in a corporate office or a bank—but life had other plans.

Chasing Bigger Dreams: Life in America

In my early 30s, I took a brave leap and moved to America, where I lived for three years. It was both exciting and challenging. I experienced my first snowfall, lived through four seasons, and saw a whole new side of the world. I met people from different backgrounds, adjusted to a new culture, and learned how to be truly independent.

Life in the U.S. taught me to believe in myself. I learned how to adapt, grow, and navigate unfamiliar situations. I also learned what it meant to miss home—my family, Filipino food, and the deep sense of belonging only the Philippines can give.

Though I didn’t work as a teacher during my time in America, the experience changed me. It made me stronger, more open-minded, and more determined to live a meaningful life.

Coming Home and Starting Fresh in Baguio City

After three years abroad, I made the decision to come home to the Philippines and start a new chapter in Baguio City. The move brought peace and clarity. Baguio, with its cool climate and creative energy, felt like the perfect place to start again.

It was here that I reconnected with something that had been quietly growing in me over the years—my passion for teaching.

Finding My True Passion: Teaching English

I started working online, teaching English to students from all over the world. What began as a part-time job quickly became a full-time passion. I realized that teaching is more than a profession—it’s a calling.

I began helping kids, adults, professionals, and even seniors improve their English skills. I created fun, interactive lessons using storytelling, songs, games, and roleplays. I trained new teachers, led speaking clubs, and prepared students for language exams like IELTS and TOEFL. Every class brought joy and meaning to my life.

Teaching allowed me to express my creativity, connect with people across cultures, and make a difference—all from the comfort of my home.

Full Circle: Grateful for the Journey

Looking back, I never imagined that a small-town girl from Urdaneta would live in America, return to Baguio, and find her true self through teaching. Life hasn’t been perfect, but every step, every change, challenge, and chapter has led me here.

Today, I continue to teach, mentor, and dream. I support my family with pride, inspire learners around the world, and wake up each day excited to do what I love.

This is not the end of my story—just a beautiful beginning.
